Customer Question: Please source coffee from Puerto Rico.  C'mon guys - it's going to take all of us to get out PR friends back.  And the coffee = fab!

Co-op Answer: Thank you for your input! Our bagged coffee is only for local roasteries, but I will reach out to see if they are working with any Puerto Rican farms.  Unfortunately, the hurricane destroyed 90% of the island's coffee crop, which means there may not be any to buy. Bulk Dept. will look into it. -Olivia, Grocery Buyer

Q: Bring back Blake organic chicken pot pie.

A: Thank you for your input! The larger pot pie was discontinued due to extremely slow sales, but we will plan on bringing back the smaller size. -Olivia, Grocery Buyer

Q: What happened to Blake's organic chicken pot pie?

A: Thank you for your input! Are you looking for the small pot pie or the larger one? The larger pot pie was discontinued due to slow sales, but we will happily bring back the smaller one - it was originally here because our distributor sent it to us by mistake. -Olivia, Grocery Buyer

A: Thank you for your input! Q: Thank you for carrying food for Passover.  Especially the Naga Bakehouse Vermatzah! Your Jewish neighbors and members appreciate it!

A: Thank you for your input! Next year, I hope to do even better with our display and product selection, but I appreciate your support. -Olivia, Grocery Buyer

Q: Please do not carry Vermotzah anymore.  Nice box but taste horrible, like cardboard!

A: Thank you for your input! We have been working with them for a long time and many of our customers enjoy their product. I will look into some alternatives for next year. -Olivia, Grocery Buyer

Q: Hi there, the Udi's "new" multigrain bread is awful, I'm sorry to say.  Like glue-doughy sticky.  Thawed or frozen, it's impossible to separate the slices.  They were all sticky and ripped apart.  Yikes!

A: Thank you for your input! I will pass this information along to their baker.  Unfortunately, this was an Udi's recipe change and not a switch on our part, so we cannot switch back.  Are there other brands you would recommend? -Olivia, Grocery Buyer

Q: First, thank you for everything you do! I would love to see more nitro coffee choices! The can of nitro coffee you have now is the best! It's just been out for a few weeks.

A: Thank you! We are currently working on bringing in a new line called King's Row, from Hanover.  They should be in stock in the next two weeks! -Olivia, Grocery Buyer

Q: Please bring back Siggis plain Icelandic skyr/yoghurt. The new brand does not compare.

A: Thank you for your input! We replaced Siggis with Green Mountain Creamery Skyr because we believe in supporting local whenever possible.  WE are happy to help you place a special order for the Siggis if you would like.  If we receive enough feedback, we may consider bringing back one or two Siggis items. -Olivia, Grocery Buyer

Q: Siggis Skyr natural - please get it back.  The new skyr is not tart enough and does not work for making yoghurt.

A: Thank you for your input! We made the decision to switch to Green Mountain Creamery because we believe in supporting local businesses.  It is also shipped a much shorter distance, making it fresher and more environmentally responsible.  We would be happy to special order the Siggis for you.  If enough customers eques the return of Siggis. We may consider bringing one or two items.  -Olivia, Grocery Buyer

Q: Please bring back plain Siggis yoghurt - the new stuff is not as good!

Q: Siggis Skyr! Please bring back this - the local version is blah!

A: Thank you for your input! We chose to bring in the Green Mountain Skyr because we believe in supporting local whenever possible. Green Mountain is lower sugar and higher in protein, which also swayed my decision.  We would be happy to help you place a special order for Siggis.  If enough people reach out, we may bring back two Siggis options. -Olivia, Grocery Buyer

Q: The new plain skyr is not as good as Siggis - the quality is not the same and it does not have the true Icelandic flavor.  Please bring back plain Siggis!

A: Thank you for your input!  We chose to bring in the Green Mountain Skyr because we believe in supporting local whenever possible. We would be happy to help you place a special order for Siggis.  If enough people reach out, we may bring back two Siggis options. -Olivia, Grocery Buyer

Q: Could we get a large jar of lime juice option like we have for lemon?

Q: Please bring back Nancy's yogurt! We love the large size containers. Thanks!

Q: Please carry Beyond Meat "Beyond Burger" (vegan burger).

A: Thank you for your input! We have this in our refrigerated vegan meats section.  It's an exciting new product for us - I hope you like it.  -Olivia, Grocery Buyer

Q: Sorry that the Passover section wasn't out in front like last year, especially since the Easter display is very prominent. Not sure why the Passover stuff is all the way in back.
A: Thank you for your input! This was completely my fault.  While the space we put the Passover items is high traffic, it is very low visibility and as a new buyer, I didn't think about it until after we set it up.  We did move the product up front for the week of Passover and will do a more prominent display next year.  I'm so sorry for this. -Olivia, Grocery Buyer

Q: It would be wonderful to be able to purchase Namaste GF flour mix.
A: Thank you for your input! We have not bought this brand in because they have not been very successful at other stores.  However, if we hear more requests, I will happily reconsider.  In the meantime, we would also happily help you place a special order for this product. -Olivia, Grocery Buyer

Q: Assam Black Tea is now "a tad sweet" with 35 cal sugar/bottle.  Can we get just black tea, same brand, instead? Thanks.

A: Thank you for your input! What a great suggestion, thank you for pointing this out. I can definitely replace one of the sweeter, slower sellers with the "Just Black". -Olivia, Grocery Buyer

Q: I suggest carrying iodized salt.  I have a friend who has developed a goiter from eating only these pure/exotic salts.
A:  Thank you for your input! We do carry an iodized salt from Hain.  Please ask any member of our staff to help you locate it the next time you are in. -Olivia, Grocery Buyer

Q: Misty Knoll chicken thighs? Haven't seen any for a few weeks? Are they not offering them anymore? Or have the chickens changed?

A: Good question! The thighs are the one Misty Knoll item that we just cant get enough of - partly owing to the anatomy of the chicken.  They come in Monday and Thursday afternoons and generally don't last through the following days.  We started carrying the Smart Chicken to keep up with demand.  Thanks! - Nick, Meat Buyer

Food Services

Q: Try finding smaller containers for the salmon pieces.  The ones you use are twice the needed size.

A: Will do! -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: Any chance GF muffins could also be vegan? Vegan ones are the best!

A: This is an item that could be special ordered.  -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: Please keep the Baba Ganoosh in your Deli.  It's out tonight and they weren't sure if you're still carrying it or not.  I love it! Eat it for dinner regularly.  Please keep it.  Thank you!

A: We stopped carrying it as it was one of the few items we had to cull regularly and had lagging sales.  You can always special order it, though. -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: I have many allergies and I do not expect all hot bar items to meet my odd criteria, however, it is disheartening to see milk and wheat where could have been left out: chicken, meatballs, maybe consider GF pasta, too! Please be considerate to the allergic people here.

A: We do try to minimize allergens and not use them in an item when they aren't pertinent to a dish / cuisine but sometimes they are.  I apologize if we don't get there every time. -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: Yuck compost bucket on counter food area - I wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole.  Germ city.  Better place, foot operated open.

A: We are looking into an alternative and keep you posted. -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: No wheat/milk on roasted hot bar chicken!

A: Thanks for the comment.  Not often do we have those in our roasted chicken, but some recipes require it. -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: Please brink back the kraut/kimchi in the Deli in bulk.

A: We do offer it on the salad bar but as of now there is no other space to offer it; we are simply out of room. -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: Please have small servings of quiche available at the salad bar.  Yummy!

A: Hot or cold?  Please stop by and let me know when you have a chance. -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: Nori Seaweed Salad was good last summer.  Please bring it back.

A: I do not anticipate brining it back as it was an item we received the most complaints about. -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: Please be aware of how food looks on food bar - some looks like it was last week's leftovers and boiled sausage with no seasonings.

A: Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.  You are correct - appearance is the first thing we "taste" and we can certainly do better. -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: You replaced local mead options, such as Groenfell, with Yellowtail and Barefoot products, even Old English? Please provide proof that shopping local is a creed you follow.

A: Thanks for reaching out.  We are not done with the reset yet.  I have more shelving coming.  As soon as we get them here Groenfell will be back! As far as local goes, 90% of the Beer Department is local.  If you would like a tour of the department would show you around.  Look for Groenfell and Havoc soon. -Patrick, Beverage Buyer

Q: Where is the canned mead? Havoc and Groenfell.  Depend on HMC as a concrete spot to purchase them from. Thanks!

Q: Please bring back Groenfell Mead! It is the best!

A: Thanks for reaching out.  The reset is not done yet.  We are waiting on more shelving.   When it arrives the Groenfell/Havoc will be back.  Look for it soon. -Patrick, Beverage Buyer

Q: I am not happy with the changes to the wine section.  Costs have gone up, boxed wine has decreased.  For those of us who aren't looking for fancy, these changes will send us to Price Chopper or Shaw's.

A: Thank you for reaching out.  Sorry you feel this way.  We, at the Co-op, have not raised any prices in the wine department.  A couple times a year Bota Box does not give us as deep a deal so we can not put it on sale as it usually goes.  If you feel like some of your favorites have gone up in price, please stop down and see me so I can take a look with you.  We have a lot of really tasty, inexpensive wines I would love to show you. -Patrick, Beverage Buyer

Q: Sorry to see the best beer selection in Central VT gone! You had some stuff not even available at Bev. Warehouse.  Guess I'll be buying my stout and porter up there...

A: Thanks for reaching out. Sorry that you feel this way.  We did discontinue a bunch of product due to poor sales and to make room for the wine reset.  You can special order just about any product we used to carry. -Patrick, Beverage Buyer

Q: Please oh please! Bring back the Co-op's Dal that you used to have everyday.

A: The Red Lentil Dal we serve on curry day? Come see me when you have an opportunity. -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: Some time ago I suggested an All-You-Can-Eat salad bar.  Chef's reply asked "What price?"  Don't know.   Seems there should be one that works - high enough to break even or make money, yet low enough to attract more diners. By the pound for light eaters, or All-You-Can-Eat for hearty eaters.  With greater volume, there not an efficiency of scale that will make this work?
A: The price would be much too high.  There really isn't a way to make that work. Thanks for the suggestion, though. -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: I love Joe's soups. Thanks.
A: So nice to hear! I will let him know. -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: The new Deli jackets are sharp! Very nice.

A: Agreed! -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: The HMC Chicken Curry soup last week...amazing! Please make it again.

Q: Soup suggestion: Potato Leek.

A: Mmm...suggestion heard - I hope you are here when we make it! -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: Still loving the hot bar - and appreciate your reply and effort to change the menu days.
A: Thanks so much for taking the time to share that.  We are trying! -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: The wax paper bakery bags are too small and not sturdy - as soon as I put my muffin in the bag it splits open!
A: Thanks for the feedback. We are looking into other options.  -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: I would like smaller reusable deli takeout containers.  I looked online and saw some made by the same company as the currently available ones - they're 9 X 6.5 X 2.5 and look just right for a single meal - thanks! I'd even buy some and donate them!

A: We are going to get this done for you and others who have requested this.  Karlyn will be in touch when they are in stock. -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: My understanding is that the plates at the salad bar are sterilized in a dishwasher.  However, sometimes they have a bit of smudge on them  But what is especially disconcerting is the backs of the plates feel like they have baked on grunge.  The backs need to be wiped off but first gone over with plastic scrubby.

A: Thank you for the feedback - the dishes are supposed to be wiped dry when they come out of the machine before they are placed on the bar.  Clearly we can do better and be more consistent. -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: My wife and I love the large and growing selection of vegan options in the deli, hot bar, and grab and go cooler.  It would be great if you could use maple syrup instead of honey as a sweetener in more of your prepared items like Japanese Sesame Noodles and NRG bites.

A: Thanks for the suggestion.  Honey is often one of those items we forget isn't vegan! We will do some testing and see if it can work. -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Q: I'll not beat the "Joe's soup = bad/not tasty" horse anymore, but I will not give up pleading with you to bring the Co-op's Dal back - please!

A: I think you are starting to convince me. -Doug, Prepared Foods Manager

Wellness

Q: Please carry Daphne's Diary (UK) magazine - she's earth-friendly, a good read, and the sort of magazine you actually read again.
A: Thanks for your suggestion.  I contacted out magazine distributor to see if it might be added to our mix.  They don't carry that title currently but have noted the request. -Laura, Wellness Manager

Q: Lost my wallet between car and checkout, walked back in to make a return and saw it was gone.  MOD and service clerk were so helpful, checked security footage to narrow down where it was - found it in a difficult to see spot in my own car.  Thank you so much.
A: You are welcome.  I am glad we could help. -Kari, General Manager

Q: When the "Co-op" hires a public relations firm something has clearly gone terribly wrong! And all the screens are expensive and unnecessary!

A: Thank you for your comments.  I believe we made a good decision in getting professional help with our communications plan.  The Co-op does many important things in the community and it is important that we are effective in communicating these. -Kari, General Manager

Q: You hired a PR firm to "better tell our story?" As a member, I object.

A: We did hire a consultant to help us develop a communications plan and be more systematic and effective in letting people know how we are working towards our mission.  I would be happy to discuss further. -Kari, General Manager

Q: Any chance you could provide bread slicing?  I'm having a hard time slicing bread. Thanks.

A: We do offer some sliced bread form Red Hen.  Bread slicing equipment is very expensive and we do not have plans to buy one.  Sorry. -Kevin, Operations Manager

Q: I'm pretty unhappy when you submit a comment and ask to be contacted - but never hear anything.
A: Here's my email: kevino@hungermountain.coop or phone: 262-3205.  I'm here to assist you. -Kevin, Operations Manager

Q: Had lunch, guy on the phone the entire time talking loudly.  Several people were bothered.  Can we set a limit on phone calls in lunch section of deli?

A: While I understand this annoyance, it would be impossible to enforce.  -Kevin, Operations Manager

Q: Car charging station always has the same car parked, not shopping or working.  Why there all day? Why not more stations?
A: Thank you for letting us know this.  That charging station is intended for use while shopping.  We will be looking into you concern. Thanks again. -Mary, Facilities Manager

Q: Please - more than one charging station! It is always occupied!

A: Thank you for bringing this to our attention - we will consider this suggestion for our next budget. -Mary, Facilities Manager
