Jane English is best known for her black-and-white photographs that illustrate a best-selling edition of the Chinese classic, Tao Te Ching. She created these tree mandalas for her 1999 book, Fingers Pointing to the Moon. When patterns from nature are used as a basis for mandalas, there is a richness that is not present in forms that are totally human-made. To form these mandalas, a slice of a tree photo was placed eight times, rotating and mirroring it each time.
