For the past 14 years, Hunger Mountain Co-op has supported local organizations and area schools by donating grocery bags filled with nutritious food.
To fill those bags, the Co-op collaborates with local vendors and community partners to source high-need, healthy products like tuna, peanut butter, black beans, and brown rice.
We have been lucky to have amazing partners, many of which that have been with us since the beginning. Northfield Savings Bank donates funds for purchasing the food and volunteers to help pack the bags. Vermont Coffee Company donates freshly ground organic coffee. La Panciata Bakery provides locally baked bread, and we receive organic produce from Albert’s Organics. New this year, UNFI, an organic and natural food distributor, has provided funds to help purchase the product needed for our bags. Co-op shoppers and members help support this event with register donations and by volunteering to help pack the bags.
On Wednesday, Dec. 20, over 30 volunteers will come together to pack 650 bags. These bags will be then be picked up by volunteers from our nine recipients to be directly distributed to their clients and students right before the holidays.
Barre City Elementary, Barre Town School, Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, Family Center of Washington County, Montpelier Food Pantry, Montpelier Senior Activity Center, Union Elementary School, Vermont Council on Aging, and the Washington Elves
Give change by rounding up! Anytime you check-out at the Co-op, you can choose to Give Change by rounding up your total to the nearest dollar. All of the change collected in November and December will be used to purchase healthy pantry staples for your neighbors in need.
Additionally, remember to bring your reusable bag when shopping at the Co-op. For every bag, basket, or box used in place of a paper bag, the Co-op will donate five cents to the Montpelier Food Pantry. Those nickels add up! Last year, our shoppers raised over $10,000 for the food pantry.
