Greetings from the Co-op! After a somewhat dreary start, summer seems to be in full swing which here at the Co-op means lots of local fruit and veggies and of course Pennsylvania peaches.

Here’s hoping you have a fun, inspiring and warm summer season. For now here’s a quick update:

Grant Applications Available - Our Co-op created the Hunger Mountain Cooperative Community Fund in 2005 as another tool to further our mission of building a dynamic community of healthy individuals, sustainable local food systems, and thriving cooperative commerce. A portion of our Fund is structured as an endowment, with money invested in cooperative development broadly and the interest earned used for micro-grants locally to support non-profits and businesses. The Fund has grown steadily, and since 2012 we have awarded grants annually for a total of nearly $40,000. Last year’s grants totaled just under $10,000 and benefited Another Way, Barre Senior Center, Bethany Church, Calais Agriculture Committee, Central Vermont Council on Aging, and the Good Food Good Medicine Program (A Food Justice Program of Highgate Non-Profit). Over the years we have found that grants as small as $250 can have a significant impact on innovative projects in our local food system.

Applications for 2017 grants are now available online or in the exit way of the Co-op. Completed applications are due by August 31. A committee reviews the applications and makes grant recommendations to the Co-op council. We will announce this year’s grant recipients at our Annual Meeting on the evening of Thursday, November 2.

You can support HMCCF by spreading the word and by helping it grow. Many member-owners donate their patronage refund each year to support the Fund. For the rest of July, Co-op shoppers can help support the Co-op Community Fund by rounding up your total at the register to the nearest dollar. The HMCCF is a small but powerful way for our co-op to give back to our community and help advance our values of health, sustainability, and cooperation.

Member-Owner Coupon Update - Based on the feedback of member-owners, we are taking the “e” out of our eCoupon. The coupon is still available electronically but now also in print form on our Member-Owner Specials Flyer. The coupon is issued every two weeks to help member-owners save from $1 to $12 on shops of a certain size in a particular department or the store overall. The Member Specials Flyer comes out monthly and offers savings of about 20% (or more) on dozens of (mostly local) products. Sign up for the Co-op’s eNewsletter and never miss one of our coupons, sales flyers, or other ways to save!

Please mark your calendar for our Summer Party and Member-Owner Appreciation Day on August 20.

As always, thank you for your continued support and see you at the Co-op!
