In central Vermont, one in four of us struggles with hunger. This holiday season, Hunger Mountain Co-op worked closely with our community to help provide healthy meals for our neighbors in need. With your support, we were able to pack and distribute 650 bags of groceries, collect 850 pounds of shelf-stable food, and raise nearly $5,200!
On the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 20, over 30 volunteers join Co-op staff at the Vermont Foodbank for our annual Holiday Grocery Pack. Together, we prepared 650 grocery bags with healthy pantry staples. That afternoon, more volunteers from six area organizations and three local schools picked up the packed grocery bags for their clients and students. Many groups began distributing their bags that same afternoon. See photos from this year’s Holiday Grocery Pack here.
Now in our 15th year, we are lucky to have such amazing Holiday Grocery Pack partners. Northfield Savings Bank donated funds for purchasing the food and provided staff volunteers to help pack the bags. Vermont Coffee Company donated freshly ground organic coffee. La Panciata Bakery provided locally baked bread, and we received organic oranges from Albert’s Organics and ecologically-grown apples from Scott Farm Orchard. New this year, UNFI, an organic and natural food distributor, provided funds to help purchase high-need product like peanut butter, black beans, and brown rice. Many thanks to our Co-op shoppers and members that helped support this event with register donations and by volunteering their time packing the grocery bags!
On Thursday, Dec. 21, the Co-op hosted a one-day food and fund drive in partnership with our local ABC/Fox affiliate, Northfield Savings Bank, WDEV, and the Vermont Foodbank. The Feed A Family drive was a huge success! Throughout the day community members stopped by the Co-op with their donations. Through the generous support of our community, we collected 870 pounds of shelf-stable products and raised nearly $5,200. This donation to the Vermont Foodbank will create 9,326 meals for our central Vermont neighbors in need.
Thank you for helping to fight in our community. When everyone does a little, together we can accomplish a lot!
