This April, we are celebrating Earth Month, with a variety of workshops and events focused on sustainability and environmental stewardship. On Saturday, April 27, we’re partnering with Central Vermont Solid Waste Management District (CVSWMD) to host Sustainability Saturday, a day filled with activities to help you reduce, reuse and recycle.
We will have a tent in our back parking lot, where we’ll be hosting a book and clothing swap from 8am-2pm, along with cell phone and battery recycling. Have some clean, gently-worn spring or summer clothing items you no longer use? Or a book you’re done enjoying? Bring them to the tent and swap them out for some new threads or a great new summer read. By swapping, instead of throwing items away, you keep them out of the waste stream and allow them to be reused again and again. All are welcome, and donations are not required to participate. All donations need to be free of rips, tears, and stains.
CVSWMD is also presenting two workshops in our community room. First, their Outreach Manager, Cassandra Hemenway, will show you some easy ways to get started composting and will review other ways to keep your food scraps out of the trash. You’ll learn strategies for jump-starting an old pile, how to keep smells down, and animals out. She’ll share about managing food scraps, why they break down, and how to use food scraps as a resource in your own yard. This workshop, called Compost Basics, will be from 11am to noon, and everyone will go home with a starter kit.
Then, from 1-2pm, Cassandra will answer all of your recycling questions in an in-depth workshop titled Recycle Right: From Blue Bin to Beyond. Come learn the overview of Vermont’s recycling laws, what goes in/what stays OUT of your recycling bin, and what “additional” recycling is, how to do it right, and how to avoid “wish cycling.”
Workshop space is limited, and pre-registration is encouraged. To reserve your seat for one of these free workshops, email your contact info to email@example.com. Both workshops will be held in our upstairs community room, with access to a freight elevator upon request. View our calendar to see all of our workshop offerings here.
From 11am-2pm, our featured community partner for April, North Branch Nature Center (NBNC), will be at the Co-op, offering information about all of their natural history, environmental education, and citizen science programs. For one day only, on April 27, we will match all of the donations made to NBNC through our Give Change program. When you check out and round up your purchase to the next dollar, that spare change will be doubled and have twice the impact. You can opt into being asked at the register if you would like to round up using the form here.
There will also be a 5% discount in the bulk department all day on Sustainability Saturday. Buying in the bulk section and using your own reusable container is an easy way you can contribute to minimizing and even eliminating waste. If you’re not familiar with shopping bulk, our bulk buyer, Terry, will be in the bulk aisle to answer all of your questions from 11am-3pm.
All week long, there will be raffle prizes in our exit way and Saturday will be your last chance to enter. Stop in and enter a raffle, explore our bulk department, trade some clothes or books, recycle your old cell phone, and check out a workshop, all during Sustainability Saturday at the Co-op!
