July Local Focus
Our community extends well beyond the walls of the Co-op. Each month, we shine the spotlight on a new group of local partners to help share their stories and celebrate their role in our community.
Featured Vendor: Douglas Sweets
Our featured local vendor for July is Douglas Sweets, based in Shelburne. Family-owned by a mother-daughter duo, they make premium shortbread cookies with a unique twist of exciting flavors. Read our interview with them here.
Featured Community Partner: Community Harvest of Central Vermont
Through July 28, our Give Change recipient will be Community Harvest of Central Vermont (CHCV). In the past five years, they have donated 175,800 pounds of food that would have otherwise gone to waste. This program, run by Executive Director Allison Levin, provides gleanings to community members who might not otherwise have access to healthy, fresh, local food. Last year, the organization delivered gleaned food to 9,000 residents of Central Vermont. CHCV accomplishes this through an impressive web of collaborations, working alongside farmers, recipient organizations, and the dedicated, passionate volunteers who do a lot of the on-the-ground and in-the-dirt work of gleaning. Read our interview with three of their all-star volunteers here.
Co-op members can opt-in to being asked to round up their purchase to give change by visiting customer service or by filling out our form online.
Bag that Bag to Help a Neighbor in Need
Help support the Montpelier Food Pantry every time you shop at Hunger Mountain Co-op just by remembering your reusable bags! For each bag, basket or box that you use at the register, we will donate five cents to the Food Pantry. In July, this totaled $919.50 and saved 18,390 paper bags. In this past year, you have helped to raise a total of $11,342.85 and saved 226,848 bags. Since launching this program in July 2016, we have donated $31,793.65 to the food pantry and replaced 635,885 paper bags. Read more about the work of Just Basics, Inc and the Food Pantry here.
