Winter Wellness
We’ve all heard the phrase “New year, new you!” And while it’s catchy and appealing, it’s not always as easy to do as it is to say.
We’ve all heard the phrase “New year, new you!” And while it’s catchy and appealing, it’s not always as easy to do as it is to say. We’re here to help. This podcast on “The Science of Sticking with It” sheds light on how to accomplish your new year’s resolutions, and the Co-op is flush with resources to help you along the way. Our produce department is brimming with possibilities right now.
Some folks look for cleansing diets to get healthy in the new year. This article on a winter detox diet emphasizes seasonal eating and how it can support overall health. Root vegetables, greens, and other nutrient-dense foods are what our body craves right now. This tom kha soup is packed with nourishing goodness.
Also, in produce, it’s citrus season. While many of us may associate citrus with the warmer months, they are actually winter fruits. Recently in, we have Cara cara oranges, heirloom navels, and pomelos. Getting creative with your citrus is an excellent way to bring brightness to your menu. Try some honey-roasted citrus, citrus arugula salad, or this mandarin shrub.
It’s also a time of year to think about boosting the immune system. Some vitamins and herbs can be taken at the first signs of illness. A favorite common remedy is elderberry syrup. McFarline Apiaries, from Benson, Vermont, makes it using propolis and honey from their bees. And Samhain Herbs in Plainfield is made by our own Jill Frink. Ask her about it if you see her in our wellness department!
We have some effective blends that are taken regularly to support healthy immune function and strengthen the system to help prevent illness.
Source Naturals’ Wellness Formula is loaded with 30 vitamins, minerals, and herbs for immune support. And right now, it’s on sale right now until January 17, 2023 ($18.99 for a 90-count bottle, save $7).
Host Defense makes an organic mushroom blend focused on comprehensive immune support with over 15 varieties of mushrooms. Both options come in a swallowable form or a convenient spray.
Vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc are all well-known for their immune-boosting properties. We’ve got them all, and with our member discount for $7 off $50 in wellness valid through January 17, 2023, it’s a great time to stock up on your immune-supporting standby.
Some folks like to make their own remedies at home – the Co-op can help with that too! We have ginger, garlic, horseradish, and turmeric in our produce department – all the makings for homemade fire cider! You can find dried elderberries in our bulk department.
If there’s something you have a question about or would like to see in our wellness department, let us know! Email us or stop in for a visit. Our new Wellness manager, Crystal, and all the employees in our wellness department are happy to help.
