Q: Why does the OV milk half gallon always have such a short shelf life?
A: Thank you for your input! OV milk actually has the longest shelf life of any of the milks we carry, because of how it is pasteurized.  However, unlike our local dairy, OV milk is shipped multiple times from farm, to processor, to OV warehouse, to our distributor's warehouse, to us.  That means it spends much of its shelf life sitting on trucks.  It still comes to us with two weeks left until its sell-by date, which is longer than our other milks.  -Olivia, Grocery Buyer

Q: Single use plastic is extremely bad for the planet and our food supply.  (Fish eat plastic, e.g.) Could we try to rethink how we serve to-go deli food - e.g. incentives for people to bring their own containers, ability to buy in bulk, options for people planning to eat in, compostable containers?

Q: City Market has a program that offers a discount to individuals that are lower income.  This benefit is attached to a non-paying membership (member does not receive dividends).  Maybe you could consider making your Co-op Cares program more easily accessible. 

A: It's an interesting idea, but non-paying member status is not a good expression of Co-op Principle #2: Member Economic Participation. We do have an ongoing scholarship program whereby members can apply for one-time equity subsidies. -Kari, General Manager


Q: A comment on the board complains of rude treatment by a cashier.  Your response could have acknowledged the person's experience (it did) AND given a nod to the great staff you have here.  It was disappointing that management did not have the back of staff at all. 

A: I'm sorry to hear you feel this way.  When we receive a complain through the comments and suggestions, rather than issue a vague memo to everyone saying there was a complaint about rudeness (when we find the vast majority of the staff to be pleasant and friendly), we prefer to ask the person who had a poor interaction to provide further details so we can assess whether or not it is necessary to coach someone.  That way, we are not sharing unsubstantiated generalized negative feedback with those who did nothing to bring it on.

If it came across that we are not supportive of our staff, we certainly apologize and would like to take this opportunity to proclaim that we do indeed value everyone here and will not hesitate to stand up for them in the face of cruelty, mean-spiritedness and/or unfounded censure, even if it comes from a customer.  We have done it before. :) -Alison, Asst. Q: Why don't you accept WIC?

Q: What if the default for members was to have receipts emailed and they had to opt in to automatically get paper receipts?

We prefer not to make use of any email address provided to us by our members unless we need to contact them or unless they give us permission (opt in) for us to send regular emails to them.  When new members sign up, they can opt in to e-receipts right on the application, so their account is set up the way they want it from the get-go! -Alison, Asst.
