Community Harvest of Central Vermont’s (CHCV) mission is to bring our community together through gleaning to recover surplus food produced on area farms to feed those with limited access to nutritious, fresh local food, and in the process help the community to gain a greater awareness and appreciation of the local food system, healthy eating, and waste reduction. They are all about building community and resilience around the local food system. They bring people together to learn about and support nutritious food access for all. They do this all while making sure the wonderful food local farms are producing does not go to waste.
Volunteering Summary
CHCV has 300 to 400 volunteers join them per year. On average, they have 30 people volunteer each month, with a much larger number of those people coming during the fall months. They would like to fill a couple to a handful of volunteer spots a week, depending on the season. Most often volunteers are sorting already gleaned produce, or they are going out into fields to glean crops. Some volunteers deliver, do data entry, help maintain the facility and supplies, and more.
