MFA in Writing & Publishing students from VCFA are hosting a poetry reading in our community room.

Community members are welcome to share their own writing during the night's open mic portion, and all participants will be treated to a coupon for the Co-op's hot bar.

This is a family friendly event, free and open to the public. Please bear this in mind while selecting work to share! Both poetry and prose are welcome.

Featured readers will be:

Rebecca Jamieson's writing has appeared in various publications, including Lion's Roar, Calyx, and Stirring. Her chapbook of poetry, The Body of All Things, was published by Finishing Line Press in 2017. A longtime student of meditation, Rebecca teaches Mindful Writing classes locally and online. She is currently pursuing an MFA in Writing & Publishing from the Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Nicholas Howard is a native of North Attleboro, MA, a graduate of Stonehill College, and a current candidate for a MFA in the Writing & Publishing program at Vermont College of Fine Arts. He is working towards a thesis of original work composed of poetry, creative non-fiction, hybrid pieces, and possibly a craft essay. He reads creative non-fiction submissions for the literary journal Hunger Mountain. He has been published in print in Stonehill’s journal for student work the Cairn and the College’s Alumni Magazine. His words have appeared digitally on the website for the Warwick Beacon and the blog for the Flynn Center for Performing Arts in Burlington, VT. He enjoys performing his poetry at open mics and tries to live by the rule “listen more, waste less.”

    Please join us for a free dinner and discussion focusing on local food, including the opportunities for strengthening and supporting our local food system.

    The event will be held at the Montpelier Senior Activity Center from 5:30-8pm. Doors will open at 5:15. Dinner will be provided by the Co-op starting at 5:30.

    From 6:30-7:30, there will be a panel discussion centered on the local food theme and including Jake Claro, Farm to Plate Director at the Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund, Olivia Dunton, Hunger Mountain Co-op’s Lead Buyer, and Jason Elberson, co-owner of Sobremesa, a local vendor based in Marshfield, making excellent fermented foods which they will be sampling during the event.

    The panel discussion will include topics such as the priorities for strengthening our local food system, what shoppers at the Co-op can do to support those priorities, and what exciting prospects are on the horizon. The panelists will also take questions from the audience.

    Following the panel discussion, there will be a question and answer session with the Co-op's council, providing the opportunity to find out more about the inner workings of your Co-op and its council.

    Jon Steinman Book Tour: Grocery Story: The promise of food co-ops in the age of grocery giants

    Presented by Jon Steinman and New Society Publishers

    Jon Steinman will be making a stop at our Co-op as part of the book tour for Grocery Story: The promise of food co-ops in the age of grocery giants, published by New Society Publishers. Through penetrating analysis and inspiring stories and examples of American and Canadian food co-ops, Grocery Story makes a compelling case for the transformation of the grocery store aisles as the emerging frontier in the local and good food movements.

    About the Author:

    Jon Steinman has studied and worked with all things food for over two decades. He was the producer and host of the internationally syndicated radio show and podcast Deconstructing Dinner, once ranked as the most-listened-to food podcast in Canada. Jon is the writer and host of "Deconstructing Dinner: Reconstructing our Food System" – a television and web series currently streaming online. Jon coordinates and curates the annual Deconstructing Dinner Film Festival of compelling food documentaries and was an elected director from 2006-2016 of the Kootenay Co-op – Canada's largest independent retail consumer food co-op, serving as Board President from 2014-2016. He lives in Nelson, BC.
