Hunger Mountain Co-op exists to create and sustain a vibrant community of healthy individuals, sustainable local food systems, and thriving cooperative commerce.

We host a variety of events, including product demos led by our demo coordinator and many of our local vendors, educational wine & cheese tastings, tabling with area nonprofits, Co-op council meetings, and more. Check out the calendar below for all the details.

Our Co-op also curates workshops as part of our mission to educate the community, offering diverse learning opportunities while holding presenters accountable for providing information that is informative and well-researched. Workshops are free unless otherwise noted and are typically held in our upstairs Community Room, with access to a freight elevator upon request. Space is limited and pre-registration is encouraged. To reserve a seat for any of our workshops, use the online registration form here, sign up on the bulletin board in our exit way, or call us at 802-262-3202.

If you have any questions or would like to suggest a topic/subject, a class or lecture, or an activity that you would be interested in or feel our community would like to attend, let us know here. If you are interested in possibly presenting or leading a workshop in the future, please review and submit the application found here.

This Friday, March 1, we will be having an educational wine and cheese tasting from 3-6pm in the center of our store.

This month, we will be featuring wines from Australia, which has become the sixth largest wine producing country in the world. Nearly 2,000 wineries are spread through every state, and many of them are small family-owned operations. Shiraz, a close cousin of the Syrah of France, has long been Australia’s premier red wine grape. Shiraz is normally very well balanced, with blackberry and spice notes, but can be tannic depending on the region and climate it is grown in. This Friday, we will be featuring wines from Jacob’s Creek winery located in South Australia. Varieties being sampled will be Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Shiraz.

Along with these wines, we will be sampling Grafton’s Clothbound Cheddar. The Grafton Cave Aged line of fine cheeses takes Grafton beyond its roots in Vermont cheddar cheese. The cheese is carefully matured in Grafton’s own cave aging facility using raw milk from small Vermont family farms that is thermalized and contains no artificial hormones. The rennet used is non-GMO microbial rennet, suitable for vegetarians. Clothbound Cheddar is classic milled curd cow milk cheddar wrapped in cheesecloth while it ages slowly in Grafton’s caves for a minimum of six months. Grafton Clothbound delivers a very bold cheese with both nut and mushroom notes. It is delicious any time of year on a cheese plate, in a sandwich or used in a recipe like the one below.

We hope to see you on Friday between 3-6pm for this exciting pairing.

This week, we will be featuring wines from Australia, which has become the sixth largest wine producing country in the world. Nearly 2,000 wineries are spread through every state, and many of them are small family-owned operations. On Friday, we feature a winery that brings a fascinating bit of Australian history to the wine table as well. 19 Crimes is named after the infamous 19 crimes for which convicts in Great Britain would be sentenced to “transportation,” or exile to Australia. Each bottle is adorned with a label featuring a true, real-life convict who was sentenced and shipped off to Australia for one of the 19 crimes. The winery even provides an app you can download on your phone and when you point your phone at the label, it comes to life, providing the convict a chance to tell you his or her story, in their own words. Make sure you check out that fun, unique experience while you try the Warden’s Reserve, Hard Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Uprising, all being sampled on Friday

Parish Hill Creamery produces seasonal, handmade, raw milk cheeses inspired by the traditional cheeses of Italy. Peter Dixon brings over 30 years of cheesemaking experience and he is joined by his wife Rachel Schaal and sister Alex Schall. The creamery is the culmination of Peter’s years of making cheese, teaching classes, solving problems, and imagining possibilities. Peter, Rachel and Alex love making cheese. They make cheese traditionally, simply, as near to home as possible, and with the highest quality ingredients and results that can be had. Along with those wines, we will be sampling Parish Hill’s Herdsman. Parish Hill gets beautiful milk from Elm Lea Farm at the Putney School, just up the road from the creamery, and the milk is the result of healthy animals grazing on lush pastures.  Protein and fat are balanced ideally for the cheeses produced, and the cheese changes subtly throughout the season, reflecting the growth and maturation of various pasture plants. Their starter cultures are made from the milk of 4 individual cows. Helga, Abigail, Clothilda, and Sonia were chosen for their health, their components, and their disposition.  As a result, Parish Hill makes mother cultures that are truly an articulation of their milk and the resulting cheese is a revelation of that milk, the cows, the pastures, the water and the land. Whole milk, long-aged Asiago-style Herdsman is made when the cows are grazing on hillside pastures and aged at least 12 months to develop a full, slightly sharp flavor with hints of pineapple and hazelnuts.  The supple interior becomes granular as the cheese ages beyond a year.

Beer and wine tastings are open to all folks aged 21 and older.

On Friday, March 15, from 3-6pm, we will be having an educational wine and cheese tasting in the center of our store.

This month, we are featuring wines from Australia, which has become the sixth largest wine producing country in the world. Nearly 2,000 wineries are spread through every state, and many of them are small family-owned operations. On Friday, we will be sampling from Rosemount Estate, located in South Australia, where the wine industry is responsible for more than half the production of all Australian wine. The region has a vast diversity in geography and climate, which allows the state to be able to produce a range of grape varieties–from the cool climate Riesling variety in the Clare Valley wine region to the big, full-bodied Shiraz wines of the Barossa Valley. Come in on Friday for the Rosemount Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon Blend, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Merlot.

Along with those wines, we will be sampling Ascutney Mountain Cheese from Cobb Hill. Cobb Hill is an intentional co-housing community in Hartland Four Corners, Vermont, begun by Donella Meadows, renowned founder of the Sustainability Institute. Cobb Hill is comprised of people learning to live lightly on the earth and building community among themselves and with their Hartland neighbors. The intention of sustainability underlies the living, farming, land stewardship, learning and teaching activities across all components of the community. Their cheese is made from raw milk that comes from pastured Jersey cows that are bred and raised at Cobb Hill by their dairy enterprise partners Cedar Mountain Farm. From May to September, the herd grazes on pasture maintained without artificial pesticides or fertilizers. During the non-pasture season, the Jerseys eat a small amount of grain as well as hay that is grown on the fields of Cobb Hill and neighboring farms. Ascutney Mountain is an alpine-style raw cow’s milk cheese with a sweet, mild, nutty flavor. Similar to a gruyere or raclette, it has a smooth and creamy texture and pairs well with a variety of beers and wines.

We hope to see you on Friday, March 15, from 3-6pm for this exciting pairing.

Beer and wine tastings are open to all folks aged 21 and older.

On Friday, March 22, from 3-6pm, we will be having an educational wine and cheese tasting in the center of our store.

This month, we are featuring wines from Australia, which has become the sixth largest wine producing country in the world. Nearly 2,000 wineries are spread through every state, and many of them are small family-owned operations. On Friday, we will be sampling a selection from Barossa Valley Estate, including their Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and red blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre. The Barossa Valley is considered to be among Australia’s greatest wine regions, home to some of the oldest wineries and some of the most complex, flavorful, and best-loved wines in that country.

Along with those wines, we will be sampling Vermont Shepherd Verano. Located in Westminster West, VT, this farm has 250 dairy sheep, from which they make a selection of cheeses. Verano, their “summer cheese,” is made from pure sheep’s’ milk and aged for three to five months. Its flavor is sweet and earthy with hints of clover, mint, and thyme. Their cheeses have won a number of awards, including Verano winning first place in the “Farmstead Cheeses – Sheep’s Milk Category” from the American Cheese Society in 2015.

We hope you’ll join us on Friday from 3-6pm for this exciting tasting experience.

We will be sampling their Stump Jump Red Blend, Stump Jump White Blend, Stump Jump Shiraz, and Hermit Crab Viognier Marsanne.

Along with that selection, we will be sampling feta cheese from Neighborly Farms in Randolph Center, Vermont. Made with cow’s milk, this feta features a taste that’s milder and richer than fetas made with sheep or goat milk. The texture is also different from more traditional fetas, it’s not as crumbly and easier to slice. Anyone who usually shies away from feta should definitely try this alternative, especially on a salad, with fresh fruit, or as part of a cheese plate.

Join us for Montpelier’s first Repair Café!

Saturday, March 30, noon – 4pm, at the Montpelier Senior Activity Center.

Got a beloved torn or broken item? Bring it to our Repair Café where a repair volunteer will work on it for free, while you observe and learn, and maybe even participate. There’s food, drink, information about fixing, and great company as well as a room full of repairers.

What to bring? Our volunteers specialize in: fixing furniture and wooden items, clothing and textile repair, mechanical items, jewelry, electronics, tools and computers.

This event is brought to you by The Central Vermont Solid Waste Management District, Onion River Exchange, Hunger Mountain Co-op, and the Montpelier Senior Activity Center.

If you would like to volunteer —as a repair person or otherwise—please let us know! http://www.cvswmd.org/volunteer.html
