September Local Focus
Our community extends well beyond the walls of the Co-op. Each month, we shine the spotlight on a new group of local partners to help share their stories and celebrate their role in our community.
Featured Vendor: Butterfly Bakery of Vermont
“I started Butterfly Chocolates as a natural foods chocolate company in October of 2003, while working at Hunger Mountain Co-op in the kitchen as a baker. After leaving the Co-op at the beginning of 2004, I switched it to Butterfly Bakery and started selling baked goods to Hunger Mountain Co-op and other local natural foods stores.” Keep reading our interview with Butterfly Bakery of Vermont owner Claire Georges.
Featured Community Partner: Everybody Wins! Vermont
For twenty years, Everybody Wins!, our featured community partner for the month of September, has been bringing the joy of reading to local elementary school students through a mentor-based literacy program. What started with reading sites in Barre City and Rutland has grown to a program in 21 communities in Vermont and one in New Hampshire, bringing books and reading to a wide range of schools and students. We spoke with Beth Wallace, Executive Director, about their invaluable work. Read the Everybody Wins! interview.
Bag That Bag to Help a Neighbor in Need
Help support the Montpelier Food Pantry every time you shop at Hunger Mountain Co-op just by remembering your reusable bags! For each bag, basket or box that you use at the register, we will donate five cents to the Food Pantry. Last month, this totaled $1,129.70 and saved 22,594 paper bags. Since July of 2019, we have donated $2,034.60 to the food pantry and replaced 40,692 paper bags. Read more about the work of Just Basics, Inc and the Food Pantry.
Featured Artist: Ellen B. Marshall
Our featured café artist for September, Ellen B. Marshall, first got interested in photography at the age of five, when, in a portrait session with notable pictorial photographer Axel Bahnsen, she thought, “I want to do that.” Read more about our September featured artist.
Community Events: Fall Truckload Sale
It’s time to make space in your pantry and stock up during our Fall Truckload Case Sale! For this semiannual event, the Co-op purchases many of our popular products in large “truckload” quantities. The savings are passed on to our shoppers during a large three-day case sale under a tent in our parking lot and throughout the store. Friday, Oct. 4 and Saturday, Oct. 5, from 8 am to 7 pm, and Sunday, Oct. 6, from 8 am to noon. Learn more about our semiannual Truckload Sale.
