Our Community
Serving our community since 1972

Since our early start as a buying club, our co-op community has grown to 185 employees, over 500 local vendors, and more than 10,000 member-owners. We support local schools, nonprofits, and initiatives that advance our mission of sustainable food systems and healthy communities. Our co-op welcomes everyone, and we hope to return to hosting in-person community events in the fall of 2022.

Hunger Mountain Co-op is a locally owned natural food cooperative committed to creating and sustaining a vibrant community of healthy individuals. The Co-op supports local nonprofits connected to our mission in a number of ways, including providing a wide variety of donations and sponsorships, and through our community grants program.

We also support the Montpelier Food Pantry year-round. For each reusable bag that you use, we donate five cents. Over this past year, Co-op shoppers have replaced 218,962 paper bags while collectively raising a Bag that Bag donation of $10,946.30! Since this program launched in 2016, shoppers have replaced 1,069,847 paper bags and raised $53,510.85 for the food pantry.

Each month, we highlight a local nonprofit through our Give Change round-up program. Shoppers can round up their total to the nearest dollar to “Give Change” to area organizations, including Central Vermont Humane Society, Community Harvest of Central Vermont, Vermont Foodbank, Capstone Community Action, Good Samaritan Haven, and People’s Health & Wellness Clinic.

We also contribute to school functions, fundraisers, community groups, and area events that align with our Co-op's mission. To make a request, fill out a sponsorship form or donation form.

Hunger Mountain Cooperative Community Fund was created in 2005 as a charitable-giving program. Community grants are awarded annually to businesses, organizations, and initiatives aligned with our mission. Learn more here.

Currently, our outreach programs are on hold. We hope to resume these efforts in the spring of 2022.

We provide tabling opportunities as part of our mission to educate our community. Tabling is a forum for community groups (nonprofit, educational, families/children, and the arts) to share educational materials with our member-owners and shoppers. Access our tabling request form here.

Our Co-op provides shopping discounts to member-owners who volunteer at a variety of our annual events. Learn about the latest volunteer opportunities here.

We happily offer educational tours for kids of all ages. Contact Community Relations to schedule a tour for your class or community group.

Hunger Mountain Co-op exists to create and sustain a vibrant community of healthy individuals, sustainable local food systems, and thriving cooperative commerce. We hope to return to hosting in-person community events in the fall of 2022.

Our workshops focus on a variety of subjects that are in line with our mission and are presented by well-informed members of our community. Our Co-op hosts and sponsors community events throughout the year. Check out our calendar for upcoming events.

Every year, we produce an annual impact report to reflect on how well the Co-op is doing in striving to reach our Ends. The successes and challenges of the year, our financial positioning, and the member-owner information is available in the report. Our 2021 Impact Report is available here.
