Our wine selection this week takes us to Alsace, a region in France where the wines have very Germanic influences. This is understandable since this region in the northwestern part of France is right along the border with Germany. Alsace winemakers specialize in dry, crisp, sweet white wines. While there is a diversity of varieties, many from this region feature flavor profiles of fruit, flowers, and spice, with a fresh minerality. Some of the common wines from the region include Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc, and Muscato. The varieties we’ll feature on Friday are Meyer-Fonne Cremant d’Alsace Brut Extra, Meyer-Fonne, Alsace Edelzwicker, Albert Boxler Alsace Pinot Blanc, and Kuentz-Bas Alsace Pinot Noir.
Along with these French wines, we will be sampling Jasper Hill’s Moses Sleeper, named a Revolutionary War scout of the same name who was killed while defending the Northeast Kingdom's Bayley Hazen Military Road. This soft-ripened, brie-style cheese is an original from the Cellars at Jasper Hill, with a thin, bloomy rind and a luscious, milky interior. A very approachable cheese, it develops more complex flavors as it ripens, including cauliflower, crème fraiche, and nuts. This is a perfect cheese for the brie-style component of your cheeseboard and will pair well with many foods as well as a variety of beverages.
