January Local Focus
Our community extends well beyond the walls of the Co-op. Each month, we shine the spotlight on a new group of local partners to help share their stories and celebrate their role in our community.
Featured Vendor: Sobremesa

Sobremesa in Marshfield, Vermont, is a family-owned and operated company specializing in fermented foods such as kimchi and sauerkraut, made using traditional fermentation methods, with ingredients grown on their own and other local Vermont farms. Check out our interview with Caitlin and Jason to find out more about their work and great products here.
Give Change to Support Capstone Community Action

With a wide-ranging variety of services, Capstone Community Action seeks to “help people achieve economic well-being with dignity and develop partnerships to strengthen Vermont communities.” Their aim is to assist people in meeting their basic needs, such as food, shelter and transportation, while building sustainable communities, by supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses, and supporting both community partners and program participants to ensure that they are heard, educated and able to achieve their goals. While they have numerous programs, their services primarily fall into the categories of community economic development, family & community support services, head start, and weatherization.
All month, you can support Capstone and their Fuel Your Neighbors program by rounding up to “give change” every time you make a purchase. That change adds up fast and will go a long way towards supporting this program that provides emergency food and heating assistance to Vermonters in need. Read more about the Fuel Your Neighbors initiative here.
Bag that Bag to Help a Neighbor in Need

Help support the Montpelier Food Pantry every time you shop at Hunger Mountain Co-op just by remembering your reusable bags! For each bag, basket or box that you use at the register, we will donate five cents. In December, those nickels added up to $891.15 for the Montpelier Food Pantry and 17,823 bags saved! Since July, you have helped to raise a total of $5,466.80 and saved 109,357 bags. Read more about the work of Just Basics, Inc and the Food Pantry here.
Featured Artist: Merry K. Schmidt

Our featured local artist now through February is Merry K. Schmidt. A lifetime student of literature, art, and nature, Merry had little spare time for artistic endeavors while teaching full time and raising a family. Still, she took a variety of art classes as time permitted and was able to increase the focus on building and utilizing those skills after her nest became less crowded. Read more about Merry and what inspires her lovely work here.
