In December, Consumer Reports released the findings of a study that looked at the levels of heavy metals in various brands of dark chocolate bars. In total, 23 brands were found to contain levels of lead and cadmium higher than the limits established in California. This includes several popular brands the Co-op carries, such as Alter Eco, Equal Exchange, Lily’s, Endangered Species, and Tony’s Chocolonely. 

Lead and cadmium are naturally occurring in the environment. Cadmium may be especially prevalent in soils where chocolate is grown, and industrial activities have increased the levels of lead found in some soil, water, and air. Cacao trees appear to take up the metals which are concentrated through the process of drying the beans. Regular exposure to heavy metals is harmful to all people, but young children and pregnant people are at the greatest risk for brain development impairment. 

Our co-op reached out to the brands we sell in the study. Currently, we’ve heard back from two brands who expressed surprise at the results and emphasized that their products are acceptable according to U.S. and European standards, which are less strict than California’s. Our national cooperative association (NCG) has also reached out to all the brands encouraging them to take steps to reduce levels of the metals in their products. 

Customers are advised to consider these steps to reduce exposure: 

• Try chocolates with lower cacao percentages. 
• Limit intake for children and if you are pregnant or nursing. 
• Eat a varied diet with plenty of calcium and iron. 
• Make dark chocolate an occasional treat.
