Nitya Brighenti is our September and October Art in the Café artist. Nitya started painting in childhood: images of Roman emperors falling from horses, cowboys, imitations of Picasso, etc., all in tempera, picking up oil and watercolor later on. Nitya had several solo exhibitions in NYC, Hawaii, Italy, and in Vermont.

Creating art in a workspace that Nitya describes as, “Classical, based on light and shadows scenes,” Nitya is inspired by artists such as Sargent, Klimt, and Toulouse-Lautrec, adding that, “I’m stubborn and I repaint the same scene many times, throwing away a lot.”

Nitya is interested in exploring three things in her Art in the Café exhibition:

• How the people perceive the space they are in, the windows over the river, the threes surrounding it, and the houses on the other side. Or is their perception limited to the table and the food being consumed? Or to the conversation taking place? The others? solitude?
• Shortening the space and time, when exhibiting work. Be there, in a gallery, even by restricting the subjects of the work, possibly to the gallery itself. 
• Taking up the challenge of a direct relationship, almost a confrontation, with the gallery’s space itself, in a sort of ‘situationism,’ where space and time end at its threshold.
