Round up at the register through our Give Change program to support Central Vermont Adult Basic Education from March 30 through May 3, 2026.
Central Vermont Adult Education (CVAE) has provided adult education and literacy services in Washington, Orange, and Lamoille Counties for 60 years. All services are free for out-of-school adults age 16+. CVAE partners with students to help them gain important assets they need for success in careers, further education, family, and community. CVAE believes that through acquisition of essential assets, students gain new opportunities that can be life changing.
TANGIBLE ASSETS
-
- Academic skills for life, family, career and further education
- High school credentials
- English language acquisition and US Citizenship
INTANGIBLE ASSETS
-
- Self-confidence
- Skills like flexibility and self-control for managing life tasks
- Time management
How does CVAE provide these assets?
CVAE programs are individualized and student-centered to help students formulate and achieve their goals through contextualized instruction in core programs:
- Literacy to high school levels
- High school credentialling
- English Language Learning/Civics
- Workforce Development/job readiness
What are the types of goals CVAE students have?
CVAE has found that when goals are personalized and framed in the context of life, family, career, and further education they become more attainable. For instance, a student may have a stated goal to become a better writer. However, writing has always been a struggle. They ask, “why do you need to write?” Perhaps the answer is to get a promotion at work that requires email skills. The goal becomes about one’s career rather than the academic skill itself, which is much more accessible. Common goals are:
Life and Family
-
- Computer and Internet literacy
- Financial literacy
- English Language Learning and US Citizenship
- Reading to a child, helping with homework, communicating with schools
- Community/civic involvement
- Health and legal literacy
Career and Further Education
-
- High school credentials
- Job readiness / Workforce Development
- Computer/digital literacy and certification
- College/trade school preparation
- Preparation for college or pre-professional placement exams (e.g. Accuplacer / Praxis I)
“CVAE changed my life. I don’t think I would have been successful without it. First, I can put that I’m a high school graduate on my resume, which is very important. Second, it showed me that I could come out of a tough place and be successful.” ~Celine
CVAE helps 450–500 adults a year to GET AHEAD in career, further education, family, and community!
