Brian Slopey has been taking nature-based photographs since his college years. He has been a SCUBA diver since the mid-80s, and since 1990, he has been shooting underwater video and photos. A retired science teacher at U32, Brian has been teaching a Marine Ecology course at the North Branch Nature Center to a group of local high school students for several years and has brought them on international science trips.

A central goal of Brian’s teaching is to engage students in meaningful, real-world work that benefits the community and the natural world while connecting them with organizations beyond the classroom. His students have collaborated with groups such as Friends of the Winooski, the UVM Watershed Alliance, the Montpelier Conservation Commission, the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Science, and the Reef Environmental Education Foundation (northbranchnaturecenter.org/youth-programs/marine).

Brian hopes this collection of photographs of the natural world inspires viewers to care more deeply about Earth’s ecosystems.
