Gross National Happiness

Now Is The Time to Cultivate Happiness — with Ginny Sassaman

It may well be that this time of upheaval we are all living in will open to the door to major opportunity—the opportunity to make much needed, big, and deeply needed systems change. It will help us collectively to move forward if we have the kind of roadmap a Gross National Happiness paradigm can provide. Not that anything is likely to be easy. We will have to be resilient to hang in there and get the job done—and nothing builds resilience muscles like an understanding of, and commitment to, individual happiness and well-being. Sassaman will share both the big picture and specific practices to adopt right now for a happier today and a much happier tomorrow.

Ginny Sassaman has a master’s in Mediation and Conflict Resolution, and a certificate in Positive Psychology. She is a founder and former president of Gross National Happiness USA as well as a founder of the Happiness Paradigm, a platform to teach, advocate for, and write about personal and systemic well-being. Ginny also started and ran the short-lived Happiness Paradigm Store and Experience. Ginny has been a happiness presenter in Seattle, Santa Fe, Princeton, Charlotte North Carolina, Burlington, Vermont and the Kripalu Institute in Lenox, Massachusetts. In 2013, Ginny delivered her first happiness sermon at the Unitarian Church of Montpelier and has led lay Unitarian Universalist services at multiple churches in Vermont, Massachusetts,  New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina. Her book Preaching Happiness: Creating a Just and Joyful World, published by Rootstock in May 2020, is based on a series of sermons focusing on the importance and interconnectedness between systems and personal well-being. Ginny recently stepped down after leading local activist group Indivisible Calais for 9 and 1/2 years. Earlier this month, Ginny attended a writers’ retreat in France, where she focused on her upcoming book, a memoir of getting married and becoming a mother at age 17. Ginny and her husband Bob will soon celebrate their 56th wedding anniversary.
