Good Beginnings

Volunteer Opportunities for Good Beginnings

Good Beginnings offers in-home support, accessible education and meaningful connections for parents and caregivers prenatally through the postpartum period. All Good Beginnings services are free and open to all families with infants.

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs, the most common complication of childbirth) affect 1 in 5 birthing people (Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health & Postpartum Support International). Prevention is more effective, and far less costly, than treatment, so their aim is to support families with babies from the very beginning. Untreated PMADs cost the state approximately $48 million annually (VT Dept of Health, 2023) this is money that could be diverted to more urgent needs, such as the growing need for greater food security.

Social support is one of the strongest protective factors against postpartum depression and PMADs (CDC). Good Beginnings’ Postpartum Angel volunteers provide social support as well as practical hands-on help for caregivers of infants. Their programs offer nonjudgmental, stigma-free support, often becoming a trusted “gateway” to other services and resources.

Volunteering Summary

Good Beginning’s Postpartum Angels are like a caring neighbor who stops by with a warm smile, a helping hand, and a listening ear—showing up just when a new parent needs it most. Through a simple act of kindness, they leave a lasting impact, reminding families they’re not alone. When you volunteer to visit a parent with a baby, you can provide anything from companionship, preparing a simple meal, folding laundry, or cuddling baby while mom showers. Share your time, caring, and wisdom with a new parent and their baby by visiting during the tender fourth trimester—when all families need a helping hand.

  • Volunteer as a Postpartum Angel and visit postnatal families in their homes during the fourth trimester. Offer valuable emotional support, mentorship, and an extra set of helping hands.
  • Volunteer to host our weekly Baby & Caregiver Meetup, held at various times and locations around Central Vermont.
  • Do you have office skills you could share with us? Volunteer to spend time at the Good Beginnings office to help out with organizational tasks, data entry, and open hours of The Nest.
  • Help us spread the word about Good Beginnings' offerings by staffing an informational table at events.
