We asked this month’s local artist, Kate Gavin, a few questions about her art:  

Describe the art you are presenting in the Co-op Café.

I am presenting resin art this month. The geodes are part of a presentation titled “Transformation.” When I saw a stump of ash that had been cut down due to a probable infestation of the ash borer, I saw how I could transform it into something beautiful. I used resin, stones, pigments, paint (both oil and acrylic), and a very high-temperature heat gun to produce the results you see. To further enhance transformation, all the stones I used have healing properties. The other part of the exhibit also incorporates resin along with acrylic paints, crushed glass, crystals, and other materials. My inspiration comes from the colors, sounds, and feel of nature. 

When did you first start making art, and how has your practice changed over time?  

I first started making art in my 20’s. I created art using ceramics and needlepoint but mostly stained glass. I took many years off to raise my family and re-found my creativity about five years ago in a 35mm camera my husband gave me. From there, I started painting using an acrylic flow style and then combined photography, acrylic flow, acrylic landscape, abstract art, alcohol inks, and resin to create mixed media pieces.  

Describe your workspace in eight words or less  

Paint, canvases, tree stumps, stones, dried natural findings. 

Name three artists who inspire you or who you would love being compared to.  

• Andrea Dasha Reich, my favorite resin artist from Sarasota, Florida 
• My artist friend Melanie Putz Brotz who’s been a constant source of support and inspiration 
• Any famous artist! 

What is a fun fact about you that many people don’t know?

I love photographing alligators.

Kate lives in Montpelier with her husband, Dick, her biggest supporter. She uses photography, acrylic paints, resins, gemstones, flowers, and anything else that can be transformed into art. She creates three-dimensional pyramids, sculptures, and landscape art with resin, geodes, and abstract paintings.
