September Featured Artist
This September, we are featuring the artwork of Barbara Saxe in our café.
Barbara Saxe’s September exhibits watercolor florals and landscapes. Barbara observes the world around her, looking for patterns and interpreting my surroundings to create designs and watercolors for paintings and textile designs.
“There are moments in our lives, there are moments in a day when we seem to see beyond the usual- become clairvoyant. Such are the moments of our greatest happiness. Such are the moments of our greatest wisdom. It is in the nature of all people to have these experiences; but in our time and under the conditions of our lives, it is only a rare few who are able to continue in the experience and find expression for it.”
― Robert Henri, The Art Spirit
2. When did you first start making art and how has your practice changed over time?
I started creating art at a very young age. It seemed to be my favorite pastime since I was 6 years old. I am an accomplished watercolor artist and freelance textile/surface designer. My roots are from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where I earned my B.F.A. from Moore College of Art in Textile Design and Art Education. My career took off in Montreal, Canada where I taught and designed for large textile companies and created one-of-a-kind fabric for clients; projects for home furnishings included hand-painted dining room chairs, sofas, curtains, and chairs. Currently, I create watercolors to adapt and modify in Photoshop or on my iPad for Textile designs while working for a company in Sydney, Australia.
3. Describe your workspace in 8 words or less.
My workspace is full of flowers and plants that fill my soul with delightful colors and inspiration to create watercolors for paintings and design work.
4. Name 3 artists who inspire you or who you would love being compared to.
The artists that inspire me are Monet, Mary Cassatt, and Van Gogh.
5. What is a fun fact about you that many people don’t know?
I have never taught art in a public school, but I have taught in public schools for over 30 years as a Literacy Specialist.
