This month, we are featuring staff member Nessa Rabin in our Art in the Café program. We asked Nessa some questions about her artwork, check out her answers below and see her artwork in our café the entire month of April.

Describe the art you are presenting in the Co-op Café this month?

“Watercolor flowers.”

When did you first start making art, and how has your practice changed over time?

“I started painting at the beginning of the pandemic when it was impossible to gather with other people to sing and the world seemed way too quiet.

My mother is a painter, as was her mother and sister, but until my own sister gave me a box of watercolor paints, I had never spent much time trying to join the women of my family in this endeavor. Now I make small paintings, almost always flowers, and I agree with Peter Schumann’s idea that “Art has to be cheap and available to everybody. It needs to be everywhere because it is the inside of the world.” These paintings are for sale, but if the price listed is too much for you, let me know!”

Describe your workspace?

“I paint on the same kitchen table where I fed my family.”

Name three artists who inspire you or who you would love being compared to.

“I admire the work of local artists Helen Rabin, Frank Woods, and Susan Walp.”

What is a fun fact about you that many people don’t know?

“I put a voice recording studio in my closet.”
