After attending the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism, Dejung Gewissler founded Herb Craft in 2017. His family had always used herbs and natural remedies for health and wellness. Still, he wanted to understand the science of herbalism and our relationship with herbal healing more deeply. He made the original Herb Craft sodas to get his kids excited about herbs, and they were a resounding success! From there, the idea grew, a logo was dreamed up, and Herb Craft was born.

In an industry where overly processed sugary foods have dominated for decades, Herb Craft believes wholeheartedly in making drinks as healthy as possible. That means going the extra mile in terms of time and expense. For example, brewing tea takes much longer since they use whole plants and do it by hand, instead of choosing the quicker and easier route of buying premade plant extracts and mixing them. The Herb Craft family stands behind their products as being the best out there, and believes integrity is the key to success.

Herb Craft prides itself on the high quality of its products. Only a few brands in the functional beverage category use unprocessed whole plant ingredients, and Herb Craft is one of them. They want their drinks to nourish and support everyone who drinks them. Herb Craft is delicious and healthy, which sets it apart from other brands. Herb Craft strives to use as many local ingredients as possible. They use herbs from Wilson Herb Farm in Greensboro, Foster Farm Botanicals in Calais, and others when possible. All their honey comes from Champlain Apiaries in Middlebury. Herb Craft is very intentional about sourcing ingredients, especially honey, as most of it comes from overseas without oversight into how the bees are kept. Herb Craft has mainly been available in New England since its beginning, but they are incredibly excited to expand to the West Coast.

Herb Craft’s most significant challenge has been manufacturing as a small business. When they started, they couldn’t find a beverage manufacturer willing to take on their process of steeping actual herbs. As a new and small business, they couldn’t afford to have the minimum amounts made at the big manufacturers. There is a gap in the manufacturing accessibility of small beverage brands. Eventually, they opened their own commercial kitchen to produce Herb Craft and now also handle manufacturing for a few other small Vermont-based beverage brands. The creative side of the business, working on evolving brands and new products to align with the vision, is always exciting for Herb Craft. Secondly, Dejung says that having an endless supply of Herb Craft is a great job perk. He originally made the drinks for his family, so they love and enjoy them all the time.

Dejung praises the support and knowledge from other small business owners and the Vermont community, saying there is truly a supportive network here. This network encourages people to bring their ideas to life and allows small businesses to thrive. Because Herb Craft is focused on specific wellness needs, they will soon have a new flavor, focusing on immune strengthening and support. Herb Craft is best served cold or over ice.
